Delete a Stored File from a Vault with vault rm

vault rm deletes a stored file and does not ask before it does. This guide shows how to check the name first and what to do instead if you might want the file back.

The route

Jump straight to the step you need, or tick off Done means at the end.

Allow about five minutes. You need a key and the exact stored name. It takes an exclusive lock briefly.

1. Confirm the exact name

$ vault list work

Copy the name from the listing. A typo cannot delete the wrong file by accident if the name you typed is the one you saw.

2. Delete it

$ vault rm work/2026/q3-report.pdf
$ vault delete work/2026/q3-report.pdf

delete is an alias for rm.

Warning

There is no confirmation prompt and no undo. If you might want the file again, run vault get first.

3. Check it went

$ vault list work

See vault-list(1) to check the result, and vault(1) for the shared options.

Done means

  • The name was copied from vault list, not typed from memory.
  • A copy was retrieved first if the file might be wanted again.
  • The file no longer appears in vault list.
